Telecare 2006 makes its mark in Coventry

Almost 200 people from both primary and secondary care attended the inaugural Telecare event in Coventry on 11 May 2006. They heard from leading suppliers and users about the latest developments in telecare equipment and implementation and had a unique opportunity to see first hand some of the resources available at the comprehensive exhibition.

Delegates to this first BJHC-organised telecare event included medical consultants, nurses, community and occupational therapists, primary care managers and social services representatives.

The event started with a keynote presentation by Jeremy Porteus, Housing Network Lead, Care Services Improvement Partnership, Department of Health, entitled ‘Investing and delivering telecare’. This was the first of eighteen case-history presentations throughout the day, showcasing the benefits of telecare and telehealth technology and services within local healthcare communities. Delegates learned how new services and resources can enable them to monitor and improve the delivery of care to the elderly and vulnerable.

Between presentations, delegates were able to visit the accompanying exhibition to see first-hand a comprehensive range of telecare equipment and discuss with representatives of the manufacturers the benefits they offer to a wide range of organisations. Companies exhibiting included

  • Broomwell Healthwatch Limited
  • Initial Attendo
  • NRS Telecare Division
  • Oracle Corporation UK Limited
  • Pfizer Health Solutions
  • Questmark Limited
  • Tunstall Group Limited
  • Vivatec Limited

Some quotes from the day’s speakers:

"Remote patient monitoring can be used most effectively for conditions which can deteriorate easily, and where a sufficient need for such a service exists.”
Professor Russell Jones, Senior Partner, Chorleywood Healthcentre and Associate Professor, Brunel University.

“Telecare projects will shortly become a reality. Technology innovation in healthcare will help to improve quality of care while decreasing costs.”
Jeremy Nettle, Director, UK & EMEA Healthcare, Oracle Corporation UK Limited.

“There is a pressing need for all professionals to have training that keeps them up to date with new technology in their given field and also informs them about issues relating to the wide range of Assistive Technology their clients may be using.”
Keren Down, Director, Foundation for Assistive Technology (FAST).

“If you think that you can, or you think that you can’t… you are usually right.”
Kevin Alderson, Public Sector Policy Director, Tunstall Group (with acknowledgement to Henry Ford).

Most of the presentations are available together with useful reference material in the reference section.

Delegate feedback suggests that the day’s proceedings were felt to be very beneficial in bringing people ‘up to speed’ on the range and benefits of developments in telecare products and services. A significant number of people expressed a wish to see the event become a regular feature in the healthcare seminar calendar.
